Over the past year, our Wednesday crochet group at The Howard Centre has grown into something really special. What started with the simple idea of teaching people a new craft has brought together hundreds of people to learn, create, chat and enjoy some time for themselves.

Across more than 35 sessions, we welcomed over 350 attendees, with many people returning week after week and discovering that crochet really is a skill anyone can learn with a little patience and encouragement!

The group has created an amazing variety of projects, from beautiful cardigans, flowers and blankets to toys and plenty more. Some attendees came along already knowing how to crochet and wanted to improve their skills, while others picked up a crochet hook for the very first time. Seeing people start with the basics and then go on to create something they can be genuinely proud of has been one of the highlights of the group.

But the sessions have been about more than just learning crochet. They have provided a relaxed place for people to sit together, have a chat, share ideas and enjoy the company of others while doing something creative. There have been plenty of conversations, cups of tea, laughs — and the occasional moment of “why isn't this stitch doing what it's supposed to?”!

The success of the Wednesday crochet group has shown us just how much appetite there is for accessible creative activities within our community. It has also been wonderful to see people discovering a new hobby that they can continue enjoying at home long after the session has finished.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has joined us, supported the sessions and helped make them what they are. 350+ attendances and 35+ sessions later, we think it's safe to say there are now a lot more crochet hooks being put to good use across our community! 🧶💛
